One fifth of COVID-19 patients develop severe inflammatory lung disease with respiratory distress. The mechanisms leading to such uncontrolled lung inflammation are unknown. In this project, we will analyze the cells in the lung lavage of COVID-19 patients. For this, we will use different methods to study how and which immune cells get activated during COVID-19. We will also test patient blood for markers of inflammation. Our findings will be compared with results from collaborators working on a mouse model of COVID-19 and clinical studies on COVID-19. We hope so to reveal targets for COVID-19 therapy.
